THIS WILL BREAK YOUR TOOTH

Rock candy dates back to about the 1200's in Persia. An English reference to the candy dates to about the late 1500's when it was prescribed for excess phlegm. Even Shakespeare nade reference to the candy as being good for a sore throat. Basically, rock candy is a highly refined form of pure cane sugar with no impurities. The actual refining process is called crystallization, which involves breaking the sugar molecules apart and allowing them to reform into larger, purer, sugar crystals.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAPHIC FORMULAS

This chapter will not provide directions for developing film. The formulas provided have been used for the last 50 years or longer and are still in use today by many photographers in their home photo labs. Many of these formulas use chemicals that need to be handled with care or are poisonous and need to be stored out of the reach of children and pets. A number of these formulas can be purchased ready-made from photographic suppliers, but many people still enjoy preparing their own solutions, which is why this chapter has been included in the formula book.

Basically, the negative or celluloid film is coated with a light-sensitive emulsion that is exposed to light. The negative is then placed in a chemical solution to bring out the image. The negative has a layer of gelatine, which contains crystals of specific silver salts. The developing soolution reacts with the exposed crystals after they have been exposed ot light and reduce dthem to metallic silver, leaving the unexposed crystals unchanged.
ROCK CANDY FORMULA

You will need the following ingredients:

1      Cup of cold tap or bottled water
2      Cups of granulated sugar (more if desired)
                     Food coloring

Place the water in a small saucepan and bring to a boil, then dissolve the sugar in the boiling water. Pour the water into a drinking glass. Tie a pice of cotton string ot the center of a pencil then attach a paper clip to the end of the string to weigh it down. Dampen the string very slightly, then roll it in a very small amount of sugar. Place the pencil with the string haning down into the drinking glass. When the water cools (from the sugar being added), additional sugar can be added to produce larger crystals if desired.

For larger crystals, bring the water back to a boil and add as much sugar as you can whyile still maintaining a solution. Add the food coloring (if desired), mix and pour the solution into the water glass, holding the pencil with the string attached. Allow it tot remain undistrubed for 2-3 days or until the sugar crystals have sufficiently covered the string. Crystals should start to form after 2-3 hours. to produce different colors of rock candy, divide the solution or make additional solutions and use galsses with different colors.
